Stump Removal Adelaide

Stump removal in Adelaide is a different job to stump grinding — and most of the time, grinding is the right call. But if you’re putting in a pool, pouring a slab, or laying footings on the spot the stump is in, you need the whole root mass out, not just the stump ground below grade. That’s stump removal proper, and we do it across metro Adelaide and the Hills.

Stump removal vs stump grinding — pick the right one

Most homeowners search “stump removal” and actually want grinding. The two are different jobs:

  • Stump grinding — a cutter chips the stump down to 200-300mm below ground level. Roots stay in the soil and decompose over a few years. Cheaper, faster, less site disturbance. Good for: turf, gardens, general tidy-up.

  • Full stump removal — an excavator or skid steer pulls the entire stump and root ball out of the ground. You’re left with a hole that needs backfilling. Necessary for: pool installation, concrete slabs, footings, suspended decks, deep planting, and anywhere a future structural load will sit directly over the stump location.

If you don’t need the actual roots out for a structural reason, save the money — grinding is the cheaper, faster, less destructive option.

When you need the whole stump out

The scenarios where grinding won’t cut it:

  • Pool installation. The shell, the footings, and the plumbing all sit where the stump and roots are. Roots in the way of a fibreglass shell or a concrete pour are not negotiable.
  • Slab on ground for a new garage, granny flat, or extension. Decomposing roots under a slab cause settlement.
  • Strip or pad footings for a structural wall or a retaining wall.
  • New driveway with concrete or paver bedding where the roots could lift the surface as they decay.
  • Deep planting where you want the new tree’s roots to develop without competing with rotting wood and grub-attractant decomposition zones.
  • Termite-prone block where you don’t want a slowly decomposing stump and root mass acting as a conditioning ground for termites near the house. (For the record: Adelaide is lower-risk than the eastern states, but not zero.)
  • Fence post or footing on the stump line that will be installed in the next 12 months.

Our process

  1. On-site assessment. Stump size, species, root spread, surrounding structures, services (gas, water, stormwater, NBN, electrical), access for a small excavator or skid steer, and what’s going on the spot.
  2. Service location check. Dial Before You Dig is run before any excavation. Hand-digging around any flagged services.
  3. Excavation. Small excavator or skid steer for most residential jobs; larger plant for big eucalypt root systems. We work down and around the root mass, then lift it cleanly out.
  4. Removal. Stump and main root mass loaded onto the truck or chipped onsite (depends on size and access).
  5. Backfill. We fill the hole with clean fill or topsoil to grade. If you’ve already engaged a builder for the next stage, we can leave the hole open and prepped.
  6. Cleanup. Site graded, raked, ready for the next trade.

Stump removal cost in Adelaide

Stump removal is meaningfully more expensive than grinding because of the plant required and the volume of material extracted. Indicative ranges:

  • Small stump full extraction (under 30cm, easy access, minimal services): $300-$600
  • Medium stump extraction (30-60cm, normal access): $600-$1,200
  • Large stump extraction (60cm+, established gum or similar): $1,200-$3,000+
  • Pool/slab/footing prep across multiple stumps: priced per project after site visit

If grinding will do the job, grinding is $100-$350 for most residential stumps. We’ll always tell you on the quote which one you actually need.

Chemical stump removal — does it work?

Chemical stump killers (potassium nitrate, glyphosate-based products) are sold as DIY stump removal. They’re slow (12-24 months), they don’t actually remove the stump (they accelerate decay), and they don’t work on every species. We don’t recommend them as an alternative to mechanical removal where you have an actual deadline. They have a place — gradual decay treatment of inaccessible suckering stumps that aren’t in anyone’s way — but for “I need this gone before the pool guy arrives”, they’re not the answer.

Stump removal across Greater Adelaide

We do stump extractions across the eastern, western, southern, northern and Hills suburbs. The most common drivers in each area:

  • Eastern (Burnside, Unley, NPSP) — pool installations, extension slabs in heritage homes, large established trees.
  • Western and coastal (Holdfast Bay, Henley Beach) — pool work, salt-tolerant tree replacements.
  • Hills — driveway works on sloping blocks where access is half the job, and rural-residential blocks with multiple stumps from earlier clearing.
  • Northern volume play (Salisbury, Modbury) — slab and granny flat builds on existing blocks.

FAQs about stump removal in Adelaide

Q: What’s the difference between stump removal and stump grinding? A: Grinding chips the stump down to below ground level and leaves the roots in the soil to decay. Removal extracts the entire stump and root ball with an excavator or skid steer. Grinding is cheaper, faster and less destructive. Removal is necessary if you’re building, pouring or installing something structural over the spot.

Q: Do I need stump removal or just grinding? A: If a slab, pool, footing, or driveway is going over the spot — removal. If you’re laying turf, replanting, or just tidying up — grinding. We’ll confirm on the quote.

Q: How much does stump removal cost in Adelaide? A: Small stump full extraction starts around $300-$600. Medium stumps (30-60cm) run $600-$1,200. Large established eucalypt extractions are $1,200-$3,000+. Multiple stumps in one visit are priced per project.

Q: Will it leave a big hole? A: Yes — the volume of the root ball, which is much wider than the stump itself. We backfill with clean fill or topsoil as part of the standard scope unless you’ve asked us to leave it open for a builder.

Q: Does stump removal need council approval? A: No — once the tree is gone, the regulated tree rules don’t apply. The approval, if any, applied at the original removal.

Q: Can you remove stumps near a house, pool or retaining wall? A: Usually yes, but it depends on the proximity. Within 500mm of a slab edge or pool shell we work with hand-tools and small machinery to avoid disturbing the structure. We tell you on the quote what’s possible and what isn’t.

Q: How long does the job take? A: Most single-stump removals are a half-day on site (excluding the Dial Before You Dig wait time). Multi-stump or large-tree removals run a full day or two.
